Community involvement in planning

Instigated by the previous lead government department the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, community consultation is playing an increasingly important part of the planning process. This has resulted in a gap between the service traditional Public Affairs companies can offer and the needs of property developers.

Our experience of managing stakeholder relationships, effectively communicating and consulting directly with local communities means we are well placed to assist local authorities, and those commissioned on their behalf, in producing their Statement of Community Involvement for inclusion in the Local Development Scheme as part of the overall Local Development Framework. We have gained a unique experience of working with diverse communities in areas of high social deprivation and apply this experience in our service delivery.

Our work has involved, direct work with Council Members, partnerships with local authorities as well as central government at strategic levels. This means we are able to communicate effectively with them and understand the core objectives they are driven by.

To yield the right results, an effective consultation approach is essential. It must ensure that whilst minority opinion is listened to it should not dominate and that a truly representative view is presented.

An inclusive approach is required that recognises the additional challenges some members of our communities face when seeking to have their voices heard in matters that effect their lives. Whether this is due to general pressures of life, language needs, or disability, all should have an equal opportunity to participate.

Young people are especially important as the communities we build today play an important part in forming their futures and the communities of tomorrow.

Central to our approach is respect for those who recognise the importance of participating in processes that shape the future of their own communities. In practise this is demonstrated by offering clear information about who we are, what we hope to achieve, why we are concerned with the issue in hand, why their views are important and the extent of potential influence.
